American Red Cross Blood Services is Seeking Volunteers

Salt Lake City, March 18, 2013 — Volunteers are an integral part of our country’s fabric.  Their dedication is felt in thousands of communities, from small towns in central Utah to the Wasatch Front.  Nationwide, the American Red Cross relies on 500,000 committed volunteers who represent 94 percent of our workforce. And that doesn’t even count the millions who voluntarily donate blood.  There wouldn’t be a Red Cross without volunteers.

Would you like to do something that really matters?  Become a part of the Red Cross.  We need you.  Your community needs you.  Right now the Red Cross is looking for several men and women to serve as volunteers.

According to Vickie Morgan, regional volunteer supervisor for the Lewis and Clark Blood Services Region, “We would like to find some great committed people to help us with critical volunteer positions.”

  • Volunteer couriers are needed to help transport blood from collection sites to a processing center and from the center to local hospitals. If you like to drive and are dependable, able to read and follow maps, and work well with others, then this is a great volunteer opportunity.  Prospective drivers must have a valid Utah driver’s license, be able to lift at least 45 pounds and be willing to make a commitment to serve for at least six months to one year.  Driver’s training is required and will be provided by the Red Cross. Morgan added, “We are currently in need of evening and Saturday help.”
  • Donor Ambassadors are the friendly, helpful volunteers who make blood donors feel welcome and appreciated and help keep blood drives organized.  Donor Ambassadors also help ensure donors eat, drink and rest for a few minutes and then thank them for donating blood.  Volunteers can work at Red Cross mobile blood drives at businesses, churches and schools or at fixed sites in Salt Lake, Orem or Layton.
  • Facilities maintenance is a new volunteer position in Salt Lake that could be a lot of fun for the right person.  Morgan explained, “If you know how to patch and paint walls, prepare and replace ceiling tiles, replace light bulbs and florescent tubes and like to work outdoors sometimes this, may be just the volunteer placement for you!”

Salt Lake City, UT, January 27, 2014 — The American Red Cross Blood Services Region is seeking volunteers to assist with blood drives in the area.  In Utah someone needs blood every eight minutes and each day the Red Cross strives to collect approximately 440 units of blood to distribute to patients in more than 30 hospitals.

Vickie Morgan, volunteer manager for the Red Cross in Utah, explained that, “To help us meet the constant demand for blood in Utah’s hospitals, the Red Cross needs some great, committed people who love to drive and would be willing to volunteer to pick up blood from blood drives and return it to the Salt Lake manufacturing center in Murray. “ Blood drives may be held anywhere between Orem and Layton and some runs may require night driving.  Drivers must have a valid Utah driver’s license, and be able to lift up to 45 pounds.

Morgan also said that Donor Ambassadors are needed to assist at mobile drives.  “Donor Ambassadors greet donors, assist with registration, help manage donor flow and watch over donors after they donate,” she said.  Assignments to mobile blood drives are flexible and can be adjusted to fit the volunteer’s schedule.

Another volunteer opportunity available at the Red Cross is to serve as a telephone caller.  “Our phone team calls Utahans to invite them to donate at designated blood drives and to remind them of their appointments,” Morgan said, adding, “Each volunteer position contributes to the success of the Red Cross mission.  Wouldn’t you like to become part of the Red Cross mission and help save lives?”

People who want to make a difference should contact Vickie Morgan at (801) 892-4011 orvickie.morgan@redcross.org  to learn more about getting involved.

American Red Cross Encourages Donors to Make a Blood Donation Before the Holiday Season

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — The American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to make a point to give blood before the busy holiday season arrives.

Blood donations often decline between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day as people become busy with holiday festivities. Donors are needed in the weeks leading up to the winter holidays to help prevent these seasonal declines. Donors of all blood types, and especially those with types O negative, A negative and B negative, are needed now to help maintain a stable blood supply.

Blood donation appointments can be made through the Red Cross Blood Donor App – a faster, more convenient way to schedule and manage donation appointments, especially for donors on the go. The app also allows users to track donation histories, earn rewards and invite others to join them on a lifesaving team. The app is free and available for download in app stores.

Donors may also visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to learn more about the donation process and to make an appointment.

How to donate blood

Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. For more information, please visit redcross.org or visit us on Twitter at @RedCross.
